New Years are usually welcomed with predictions – an account of things that will happen in the future.
What if they foretell your future? There is an Arabian Proverb that says “Those who foretell the future lie, even if they tell the truth.”
Will 2012 be a better year than the previous one? With many who are eager to know what is to come, the New Year is often welcomed with predictions – an account of things that will happen in the future. Astrology burgeoned from the human desire to predict the future. Astrology often consists of a system of horoscopes that claim to predict matters about people based on the positions of the sun, moon, planets, the astrological aspects, and sensitive angles at the time of their birth. Many newspapers and magazines have a horoscope section, but around New Year, they feature astrological predictions using Chinese Zodiac animal signs to predict people's future. The Chinese Zodiac animal signs are determined by people's birth year. Wondering about what to expect regarding finances, health, career, family, and love life, many read these astrological predictions. There are also those who consult fortune-tellers. Humans yearn to know what the future holds for them, perhaps, to be prepared for what are to come. In his Maxims and Reflections, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote: “We are fond of looking to the future, because our secret wishes make us apt to turn in our favor the uncertainties which move about in it hither and thither.” The future holds uncertainties. What if this or that happens in the future? We worry about the future and we somehow find deliverance from our illusions of the uncertainties of the future from predictions. According to Matthew 6:34: “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” In her second book, Blue Moon, of the Immortal series, Alyson Noel wrote, “You should never fast-forward into the future. Because every time you do, you rob yourself of the journey, the present moment, which, in the end, is all there really is.” The best way to live is to live in the present. The only day we have is today.
What if they foretell your future? There is an Arabian Proverb that says “Those who foretell the future lie, even if they tell the truth.” Whatever we believe can influence our thoughts which in turn affect our behavior and decisions. We have the power to shape our future. Do we shape it based on our heart's desire or according to some prediction that was foretold about us. In his speech to joint session of Congress on 9 September 2009, President Barack Obama said, “We did not come to fear the future. We came here to shape it.” We can shape our future by creating it in our mind and exercising our will to take actions to make it real. Antoine de Saint-Exupery noted that “As for the future, your task is not to foresee it, but to enable it.”
In our life experiences, we can make an observation that no amount of planning can empower us to control the things that will happen in the future. We live in a world full of surprises. Unexpected things happen. This is why no one can predict the future with absolute certainty. According to Edward de Bono, “If you cannot accurately predict the future then you must flexibly be prepared to deal with various possible futures.” There are many ways of shaping our future in accordance with our desires. In the face of unexpected events, we can still create the future that we want, no longer the way we thought we would but differently yet wonderfully.
May you have a wonderful 2012.
