Often, we judge our day by how much we have accomplished, and accomplishments very often include only those undertakings that provide measurable material returns. What if we do things just for fun? What if we start a hobby? Hobbies are self-nurturing activities that merit our interest and enthusiasm. They are pursued for diversion rather than remuneration. Having a hobby is an expression that we love our self. A hobby can fill our spare time with self-fulfilling activities. It can inspire us to learn something new which sustains our mental growth. Humans need rest and recreation, and a hobby can be a means to delight in something, to feel exhilarated and energized. Having a hobby provides us with stimulating experiences and ideas to share with others. It often serves as gateway to meet people who possess the same passion.
As we engage in a hobby for an extended period, we develop substantial knowledge, skill, and experience in our hobby. We get better and better at it that we can turn our passion into our profession. Many successful businesses emerged from a mere hobby.
Last month, I watched a local interview of a successful businessman who owns a string of money-making restaurants. This businessman loves to cook and takes pleasure in cooking for his highly appreciative family and friends.
I was amazed after hearing about a housewife who developed a great interest in dragon fruits. Having a limited space for planting, she grew just a dozen of the cactus plant that bears dragon fruits. After mastering the cultivation of dragon fruit cacti, she studied how to preserve the fruit as candy, juice, jam, and many more including as ingredient in ice cream. She began selling and became very rich with many hectares of dragon fruit cacti plantation.
We can take on a known hobby such as photography, stamp collection, gardening, or scuba diving, or we can create our hobby by considering something that captivates our interest, learn more about it, and experiment with it.
